2016 Cookie Caucus

Hillis Elementary 5th graders held their 2016 Cookie Caucus on Tuesday, February 2nd.  Hillis 5th graders spent several weeks learning about the caucus process in Iowa.  They learned vocabulary, caucus processes, information about Presidential qualifications, and interesting information about our election process.  The 5th graders also took their information on the road and created Power Points to share with the classes at Hillis! All students filled out voter registration cards to be eligible to vote in the upcoming caucus.  The exciting culmination of all their learning and hard work took place the same day as the first in the nation caucuses in Iowa!  Students checked in at the registration desk to confirm voter eligibility.  They then listened to campaign messages from the campaign staff of each cookie to determine which cookie they would like to vote for.  After marking their official Cookie Caucus ballot, students received the cookie of their choice to make sure it met the campaign promises!  Fun was had by all for this tasty look at our election process!  Thanks to all the fifth grade students, Mrs. Fastenau, Mrs. Slinker and Mrs. Banks for all of their hard work!  A big thank you goes out to HyVee for donating all the candidates!!
