The Hillis Summer School experience has included some fantastic field trips, including recently a visit to the Botanical Center of De Moines and The Robert D. Ray Asian Gardens. At the Botanical Center the students spied exotic birds, enjoyed a refreshing rain forest mist and learned about many exotic species. Click the image to see and read more.
Hillis Elementary School students are making the most of their summer school days; building a potatoes tower, harvesting eggs and studying worms! They’re also learning about food, nutrition and exercise. Click on the image to check out more fun photos.
East High will again be the site of the Jumpstart Back-to-School Health Fair, held this year on Saturday, July 26 from 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM. Sponsored by the Polk County Health Department and Des Moines University, the event offers free physicals and other health services for students in grades K-12. Click the image for more details.
Students at 19 elementary schools, including Hillis Elementary, will adjust their schedule by 10 minutes this fall. It’s a move that will give bus drivers much needed time to get from school to school. The chickens have arrived and now they have a new home. Students were able to visit our hens while they were out in the yard for the Every Child Outside exhibition. They also enjoyed a healthy snack, yoga practice, composting lessons and garden maintenance review. And what a beautiful day for it!
