Whiteboards have become the new classroom-sized tablet! Our new EPSON projectors make any whiteboard interactive. The cutting-edge tool is enhancing student instruction and giving students another learning method to get excited about.

Students Enjoy Homemade Roasted Potatoes


5th graders prepared roasted potatoes during ECO Hour this week. Locally grown potatoes were prepared in classroom crockpots, baking all morning and enjoyed by everyone. ECO Hour is an hour every Wednesday when each class at Hillis commits to learning more about wellness, nutrition, citizenship, science and much more.

Hillis Receives $25,000 for Special Project


A gift from Charles Gabus Ford will help Hillis Elementary students learn to cook healthy foods in a school kitchen that looks a lot like the one they have at home. Principal Beth Sloan said today’s $25,000 donation, alongside another donation from the Gabus Foundation, will be enough to finish Cora’s Cupboard. Maybe in time for the first day of school!

Hillis Uses Dirt to Teach Responsibility, Nutrition


Hillis Elementary students and their families are tending a garden, learning about healthy eating and what it takes to grow food. ”It’s ultimately about empowerment for our students and setting the stage for a healthier future!” said arts teacher David Borzo. Field Trips Punctuate Summer School


The Hillis Summer School experience has included some fantastic field trips, including recently a visit to the Botanical Center of De Moines and The Robert D. Ray Asian Gardens. At the Botanical Center the students spied exotic birds, enjoyed a refreshing rain forest mist and learned about many exotic species. Click the image to see and read more.
