5th graders prepared roasted potatoes during ECO Hour this week. Locally grown potatoes were prepared in classroom crockpots, baking all morning and enjoyed by everyone. ECO Hour is an hour every Wednesday when each class at Hillis commits to learning more about wellness, nutrition, citizenship, science and much more.

A gift from Charles Gabus Ford will help Hillis Elementary students learn to cook healthy foods in a school kitchen that looks a lot like the one they have at home. Principal Beth Sloan said today’s $25,000 donation, alongside another donation from the Gabus Foundation, will be enough to finish Cora’s Cupboard. Maybe in time for the first day of school!
Hillis Elementary students and their families are tending a garden, learning about healthy eating and what it takes to grow food. ”It’s ultimately about empowerment for our students and setting the stage for a healthier future!” said arts teacher David Borzo. The Hillis Summer School experience has included some fantastic field trips, including recently a visit to the Botanical Center of De Moines and The Robert D. Ray Asian Gardens.
